About the fabric Ferrets at Heart uses in our handmade ferret bedding...

indian stripe fabric with complementary dark blue fleece

The majority of Ferrets at Heart’s ferret bedding sets will be composed of a cotton print complemented by a solid-colored fleece. Occasionally, sleep sacks will consist of a print fleece and a solid-colored fleece. Denim and Sherpa may appear from time-to-time. Each item for sale on our website has a thorough, yet easy-to-understand, description, including what fabrics have been used in its creation.

Cotton fabric shrinks much more than fleece when washed. When fabric is not washed before the sewing process, the cloth will shrink unevenly during its first trip through the washing machine, distorting how the bedding looks. This extra step prevents unsightly lumps and wrinkles. When purchasing handmade ferret bedding, always ask if the fabric was washed before any sewing occurred.

About the quality of Ferrets at Heart handmade ferret bedding......

Instead of minimizing steps and cutting corners, Ferrets at Heart has established a step-by-step method of sewing ferret bedding. The sewing process for the hammocks, sleep sacks, beds, blankets, and toys make the bedding sets look fashionable, minimizing -- and often eliminating -- visible seams. The stitching is hidden whenever possible, reducing the chance that your ferret will catch a claw in the thread. Have you ever had the padding inside an article of ferret bedding bunch up while in your washing machine? Our products are much less likely to have this problem, because the padding is secured along multiple seams.

About the straps sewn into the Ferrets at Heart handmade ferret bedding......

Nylon ribbon is used as straps for Ferrets at Heart’s bedding products. Stitching is reinforced, where the strap meets the main body of the bedding piece. Only quality nylon ribbon is used, insuring the safety and sturdiness of each piece of bedding.

The ribbon loops sewn into the products are of ribbon 3/8 to ½ inches wide and extend from the bedding one to one-and-one-half inches. Shower curtain rings make excellent hooks to attach the bedding to the cage and tend to be much easier to open and close than traditional hooks on mass-marketed ferret bedding.

We hope to offer nylon webbing and grommets in the future as ways to attach bedding to the cage. How best to provide you with these alternatives is being addressed at this time in some trial pieces made for personal use. Trying out product designs and stitching methods in our personal ferret bedding is a way to insure our customers receive high-quality bedding creations!

About the safety of Ferrets at Heart handmade ferret bedding......

Ferrets at Heart makes a special effort to insure our products are safe for ferrets. Stitches are small and hidden whenever possible to prevent claws from snagging the thread. The cloth we use is sturdy and durable. But, no matter how hard we strive to make the best ferret bedding possible, most of the safety of your ferret is up to you. Check for gnawed places on all bedding and toys daily. Throw away any toys that have been punctured. Ferrets at Heart’s products are safe, as long as you provide good supervision for your ferret and that ferret’s possessions.

Though we are not veterinarians, let us provide you with some advice we follow. If a ferret ingests a foreign object, such as fabric or stuffing, it may develop an intestinal blockage. If you notice missing portions of bedding, no matter how small, and your ferret starts acting unusual or does not eliminate waste for eight hours, consult a vet immediately. Ferrets will gnaw just about anything on occasion, some more than others, so keep hairball medication nearby; often, this remedy can relieve a blockage, relieving the need for surgical intervention.
